The Sketchbook Project London: The Movie

So last week The Sketchbook Project 2012 was on tour in London at Canada Water Library. I popped along to have a look at the sketchbooks of some of my friends that had taken part, as well as to sample some of other books in the collection...



On one of the days I was there, there was a guy with a camera filming and I didn't think much of it until he came over and asked whether anyone had taken part in the project, at which point I, rather sheepishly, put my hand up and said that I had. And the next thing I knew, I was being miked up and taking part in a short interview.

The "guy with a camera" was Felix Gonzales of You And I Films - a freelance media and video production co-op linking the creative to environmental and social issues - and he'd heard about the project and decided to come along and make a short film about it. The Sketchbook Project – London

I've previously posted about my The Sketchbook Project 2012 sketchbook, which I completed in January of this year and sent off to the Brooklyn Art Library to be part of their permanent collection. Since then, the sketchbooks have been on tour around the US and are now making a one week stop-off in the UK, and will be available to view at Canada Water Library in London from 12–19 October. The opening times to view the sketchbooks are as follows:

Friday: 4pm-8pm Saturday: 11am-5pm Sunday: CLOSED Monday-Friday: 4pm-8pm

I'm hoping to make it along tomorrow to have a look.

For those of you that missed my previous posts about my sketchbook, I selected the theme Heroes & Villains, and my book – entitled SUPERhuman – depicts various fantastical comic book heroes and villains carrying out mundane everyday tasks. It's an idea that I have plans to continue working on, and as part of that, and to celebrate the start of the London stopover, I've drawn a new image featuring Mr Fantastic from The Fantastic Four putting his mental abilities to the test with a jumbo puzzle book...

Ghost Rider's Day Off

I found another drawing that I did when I was initially working on ideas for my Sketchbook Project sketchbook last year, that I hadn't previously posted. So here's Ghost Rider, the Spirit of Vengeance, enjoying a sunny day in the park, having a bite to eat, and catching up on some reading...

It's not easy being green...

I found this drawing I did of the Green Lantern in my sketchbook, so decided to add some colour to it, just for fun. I'm not really sure why I was drawing the Green Lantern in the first place. I think it might have been when I was working on ideas for my Sketchbook Project sketchbook last year...

Sketchbook Project 2012 (Covered)

So, after finishing the interior pages of my Sketchbook Project 2012 sketchbook, I've finally completed it and drawn on the front and back cover.

If reading comics has taught me anything (...and it has!), if you put Wolverine and Spider-Man on the cover, more people will pick up your book, so...

And on the back cover is Professor Pyg, one of the best new villains from Grant Morrison's recent Batman books...

I'll be posting my sketchbook back to the Brooklyn Art Library later this week. It's been a really good project to do and I definitely want to take part again in a future Sketchbook Project!

Sketchbook Project 2012 (Work In Progress)

So I've been finishing off my Sketchbook Project 2012 sketchbook and have completed the last few pages...

...which included the first page in the book, which ended up being the last page that I drew (and I added a brief description of my project at the bottom of the page)...

Now I just need to draw something on the cover and then I'll be finished and ready to return my sketchbook back to the Brooklyn Art Library for inclusion in The Sketchbook Project 2012 World Tour.

Sketchbook Project 2012 (Work In Progress)

Now that I've finished the commissioned work that's been keeping me busy the last few weeks, I thought I better get back to my Sketchbook Project 2012 sketchbook...

I'm nearly at the end of my sketchbook now. It's been an interesting project to do, and I definitely plan to take part again next year.

This is partly based on an idea I used for another illustration recently, but I quite liked it, so wanted to use it again. Plus Mr Freeze is one of my favourite Batman villains, mainly due to the awesome animated series (and nothing to do with Arnold Schwarzenegger's role as Mr Freeze in the movie Batman & Robin!).

Sketchbook Project 2012 (Work In Progress)

I've signed up to take part in The Sketchbook Project 2012 run by the Art House Co-op with the Brooklyn Art Library. Once you've signed up for the project, they post you out a 32 page sketchbook which you then have to fill and send back by the 31 January 2012, to be included in The Sketchbook Project 2012 tour which takes in numerous locations across America, as well as Vancouver, Toronto, London and Melbourne, before being housed within the Brooklyn Art Library and available for people to view.

There are a selection of themes available to choose from to provide a starting point for your sketchbook. I selected Heroes and villains and decided to use this as an opportunity to develop an idea for a series of images that I first came up with a couple of years ago, taking iconic brightly coloured comic book superheroes and villains and placing them in a much more ordinary setting than they are usually depicted.

It's been good not to go near my computer for a change, and I've been using a combination of drawing ink, marker pen and watercolour to create the images. Here's a sneak peak at my work so far...
