Blind as a Batman...

Earlier today I saw an article online about a comic convention a few years ago where various comic creators were asked to pick up a marker, close their eyes and draw Batman. The results varied from the impressive to the hilarious, and I thought I'd give it a try myself...

Not too shabby!

The Line It Is Drawn Try-Outs: Week Two

The Line It Is Drawn is a weekly column over at the Comic Book Resources website. Every week Followers of the site's Twitter page come up with responses to a comics-related theme, and a group of artists pick a suggestion from this list to illustrate and the final result is posted online each week at CBR.

They are currently looking for new artist's to take part, and as it sounded like a fun exercise, I decided to take part. There will be two weeks of Try-Outs and then five artists will be selected from those that manage to produce an illustration for both weeks.

The topic for Week Two, to celebrate Batman's 75th Anniversary, was Batman Team-Ups and I chose to draw Vampire Batman, Count Duckula and Count Von Count from Sesame Street. And as I thought was befitting three Vampires, I decided to base it on the poster for the Eighties vampire movie Lost Boys...

All of the artworks are now up online here: http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2014/12/22/the-line-it-is-drawn-2014-artist-try-outs-week-two/ and you can vote for me...or whoever...here: http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2014/12/22/the-line-it-is-drawn-2014-artist-try-outs-week-two/9/

Holy Birthday Batman!

2014 is the 75th Anniversary of Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27, but more specifically March 30, 1937 is the date of publication of Detective Comics #27 as listed by the Library of Congress Copyright Office's Catalog of Copyright Entries for Periodicals. Which makes today Batman's 75th birthday!

To celebrate, I decided to do a quick sketch of the grim and gritty Batman from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns...

It was fun to play around with a brush pen and work in a looser style than I normally use.

--UPDATED 01/04/14--

After I posted my drawing on Twitter and @JSZorg tweeted me saying "draw Carrie now! #THEDARKSHINNRETUNRS", I decided that the female Robin from The Dark Knight Returns, Carrie Kelley would work well in contrast to the bulky form of Batman, so added her in to the image...

Warm-up sketch: Robin

I decided to do a quick sketch this morning to get me warmed-up, and ended up drawing Damian Wayne, Batman's son and the most recent Robin...

Old Skool Scribbling: Episode II - Why So Serious?

The second of my retro-themed blog posts for today is a bit silly, but it made me laugh.

As far as I can remember – all the way back to two thousand and six – sitting and drawing some stationery items led to me developing a brand new Batman villain...

DC Comics never returned my calls.

Illustration Friday: Detective

It's been a while since I've done any drawing – what with going to Barcelona and working on my website – but I wanted to get back to it, and this week's Illustration Friday topic seemed a good starting point. This week's theme is detective, which makes me think of two things: Sherlock Holmes and Batman! So I decided to draw Holmes taking a break from all his detectiving (is that a word? If not, it should be!), and sitting back and reading a copy of Detective Comics #27, featuring the first appearance of Batman... Elementary, my dear Watson!
